The Jules Verne Prophecy by Larry Schwarz, Iva-Marie Palmer

5.0

This cleverly-crafted mystery packs a major adventurous punch! THE JULES VERNE PROPHECY is a fun romp around Paris, with found family/friendship woven in, and a  speculative twist in terms of its use of Jules Vernes' stories and inventions (which only adds to the fun). The narrator, Owen, is funny, quirky, and endearing, and even shows us a peek at the extra challenges of having asthma while running around the city and encountering very old places and items.
While the mother in me cringes a little at the way the characters constantly lie about where they're going and put themselves in danger, the book is just far-fetched enough (it's borderline sci-fi/fantasy) to have me shrugging it off in the name of plot, and this didn't take away from my own reading experience either. Adults who read will have to remind themselves that kids can have a better fictional adventure if the parents are mostly out of the picture 😉 (but I do hope poor Owen gets some quality time with his mom before/in book 2). The ending was so good that it really solidified the book as getting five stars from me.
