Cursed
by Karol Ruth Silverstein
Absolutely adored Ricky and loved the message of this book. Ricky has recently been diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and is now living with her dad and going to a new school after her parents contentious divorce. There are some nasty bullies in her new school and her school is barely accessible, which leads her to skip for 6 solid weeks before being found out. Once she goes back she finds a friend in a boy named Oliver and learns to advocate for herself.
Ricky curses a lot and constantly believes she’s cursed with the pain of juvenile arthritis. She reads pretty immaturely (I would have thought I was reading a middle grade story... but there are plenty of f-words to remind me it’s a little older of a read). I loved the focus on the importance of advocating for your medical needs and finding a doctor who will work for you. I know I didn’t even get that message until I was an adult and it was nice to see it written for kids. I also loved her friendship with Oliver. The ending was slightly cheesy and wrapped up in a bow, BUT I needed this to have a happy ending. I think those do happen in life and other aspects of Ricky’s story were realistic enough to balance it all out. Excellent read!
