Scythe by Neal Shusterman

5.0

I finished this book a few days ago now and its still on my mind!
And that's annoying when your trying to read another good book...

I don't know why I put off reading this book for so long, I think I had enough of dystopian set YA novels so I just let this one sit on my shelf. Kicking myself for that now.
Its about a world where death & disease are a thing of the past and everything there is to know is known. People will live for hundreds if not thousands of years, and anybody that is "killed" is only deadish until they are revived, which usually takes 2-3 days. So when the government was overthrown as there is no need for one anymore, Scythes were chosen to balance the worlds ever growing population by randomly but strategically selected "gleaning".
The story follows Citra & Rowan, 2 teens chosen to be Scythe apprentices for one main reason, they don't want it. This makes them perfect candidates for the role of a Scythe because to enjoy killing would be murder and to have a conscious keeps you human in a perfect world where losing humanity is all too easy.
As I read on I really felt a connection to these characters and praying that it wouldn't end the way the book leads you to believe it will throughout. Scythe Faraday was a particular favorite of mine, he reminded me of a wise old grandpa, I don't want to give anything else away about him in case you haven't read this already, but hes such a lovable character.
The little journal snippets at the end of each chapter add a dimension to this book, I really liked that.
The Thunderhead is definitely intriguing, and I have a feeling this story is only just getting started!
