Nauti Nights by Lora Leigh

4.0

Full disclosure: I still can't take this book seriously. The cover is a little ridiculous and "Dawg" made me snort almost every time I read it in the first three chapters. It got better, but holy crap what a nickname. However, Leigh made it work. She made it all work and I flew through this book in a day. It was a fun read.

I was concerned about the blackmail, but not concerned enough to keep me from enjoying it. Dawg definitely knows exactly what he wants, but it was Crista's emotional turmoil that really made the book for me. And not her feelings toward the blackmail, but the ugly past they had and the secrets she was keeping and the pain she lived through. Watching these two overcome so many obstacles in their way was awesome. I loved reading through Dawg's development and his growing attachment to Crista.

The mystery was icing on the cake. Figuring out why Crista is being targeted and what's going on in the town was a great underlying puzzle. I think the book is intended to have the reader suspicious of people early in the plot, but Leigh made it work out with the intricate weaving of Crista' and Dawg's emotional story. One of the things that made the book for me was how Dawg reacted to a painful secret Crista had been keeping. It solidified these two together and showed where they both matured. I love how Leigh handled it and it really upped the level of enjoyment I had.

Now, I gotta find the other two books and read the rest of the stories, though I'm really interested in Natches.
