The Forest of Hands and Teeth
by Carrie Ryan
Hmmm... I don't remember why I purchased this title for the library. It was probably recommended in a blog or maybe it was nominated or even won a Cybil award. Boy, I sure love a good post-apocalyptic novel, but this one just wasn't good. Reading it felt empty. There was a lack of detail that left me not caring about the protagonist or any of the other characters around her. Sure, there's love and romance, but even that seemed without purpose or reason. Here's a great quote that is rather disturbing: "I drown in him, waves pulling me under and spinning me around as if I am nothing. Worthless, but everything."
I think this one is the product of the publishing industry reaching for anything in this newly popular genre to make a buck on. It seems really hyped by the powers that be, Amazon, etc. and it SOUNDS good based on the description. Who doesn't like zombies these days. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the hype. It basically falls flat on it's empty, human-like-but-not-truly-human zombie face.
