Maddi's Fridge by Lois Brandt

4.0

Although the illustrations of these girls are a bit cartoon-ish, this book is not silly in that way. Maddi is dealing with the very serious situation of not having enough food or money for her family to eat even one meal per day. Sofia makes this unfortunately discovery and keeps the secret, only deciding to break it when she realizes that her friend’s health is more important than keeping a secret - a lesson in and of itself. But this book also teaches a sneaky lesson about healthy foods, and what foods are special treats. And I love that Maddi is not one-sided - the poor hungry girl - but has talents of her own that help Sofia overcome her own challenges. The last page includes discussion questions, suggestions for kids on how to combat childhood hunger, and a website link for more information.
