The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
3.0
Perhaps I built this book up too much for myself. I had the hardcover on my wishlist months before it came out, and finally purchased it expecting a lot. Sadly it did not deliver.
While it was interesting to read a coming of age story against the backdrop of a world-ending event, this novel lacked any sort of epiphany moment or fragment of satisfaction that would make me stop, digest, and reread.
Julia, the narrator, is awkward and coping amid classmates who have already had their first growth spurt, or friends that seemingly abandoned her for others. It was a change to read a story like that juxtaposed against a dystopian scenario where the latter did not take precedence. Sure, the world may be ending but Julia is still going through the growing pains that anyone at her age goes through. Unfortunately, this only made me want to know more about the world and what was going on in other parts of it. It was a beautifully constructed catastrophe and what I really enjoyed about the book.
The ending also fell pretty flat for me. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't what I got. Perhaps more finality? It did all seem pretty rushed.
Overall, it was a good read, but not a great one.
