The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin
Did not finish book.
I got to 38% into this book and I simply feel unable to continue with it. I took a long break at around 30% but had the same feelings on returning to it this morning so I’m DNFing and returning it to the library.
I have no fault to find with the book itself. It’s a “it’s me, not you” situation.
The thing is, there are really graphic depictions of sex in this book and the sex feels non-consensual. In fact, the scene I just read had the woman disassociating during sex. I just... can’t read that kind of thing.
I feel terrible for DNFing this one as I picked it up for the Blackathon readathon and it’s the group read but I’m just getting too upset by it and I don’t feel able to continue reading. I’d also put a big warning for abuse of women, in general, on this book. The wives are all very cruel to the new wife and it is very upsetting to read. Lots of reviewers say the book is funny and lighthearted but I simply do not see it.
