Lady Susan by Jane Austen

First read (?) rating: 4
Second read (2022) rating: 4.5

There is exquisite pleasure in subduing an insolent spirit, in making a person predetermined to dislike acknowledge one's superiority.

Facts are such horrid things!

Lady Susan is a novella-length work from Jane Austen and unlike any other of her stories. If your favorite part of Bridgerton is the reading of Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, do yourself a favor and read this one. It's short, and there maybe lies its only fault, since it feels a bit unfinished as a novel. However, you're not really here for the story (though I think the ending satisfying enough), you're here to essentially read a pile of correspondence between different parties, some of which are enemies and some lovers, containing the juiciest gossip surrounding an endlessly fascinating and shamelessly villainous character: Lady Susan. It is very much worth the read.
