A Court of Sugar and Spice
by Rebecca F. Kenney
Part of this is a retelling of The Nutcracker, where two sisters end up living with their 'Uncle' but then discovering that the wooden automatons he keeps as servants might have once been real people. One bleeds on a nutcracker in uniform and he grows to be man-sized and begs for their help. They end up taking a portal in a fairytale world (with real fairies) which is being ravaged by the Rat King, and someone needs to stop him.
There are a few dark moments in this book, including close to the end, so I'm not sure this is a very kid-friendly version. Both sisters find love (and sexy times) which made me happy. I related a lot to the artist, actually, and was rooting for that sister. A good time and a fun read, even if you don't know the original story.
