4.5 stars. Loved the writing, mostly, loved Jojo and Pop and Ma’am. The writing was lovely and I kept having to pause the audio so I could savour Jesmyn Ward’s word choices. The author made me fall in love with her characters, and I even had some sympathy for Leonie, despite her inconsistent and poor parenting and decisions. Jojo made my heart break with his clear-eyed view of the people surrounding him and his need to be a parent for his little sister. My quibble with the writing was I think Jojo sounded much more mature and perceptive than I expected a thirteen-year old to sound.
I enjoyed the three voice actors’s work, also, especially that of the actor who brought Leonie alive.
