Supermarket
by Bobby Hall
The first half of this book is extremely boring and repetitive and full of cardboard characters with no life in them. A couple of the characters completely serve no purpose at all. I didn’t feel invested in the novel until Part Two but by then, I was severely annoyed over Part One so I rushed to finish Part Two.
I read in the Acknowledgments that Bobby Hall wrote Part One when he was extremely depressed and in some of his darkest days and then waited two whole years until picking up the book again and finishing it up with Part Two. And that really shows here. Part Two is better paced and definitely keeps you gripped to the pages. Part One however, which takes up a little more than half the book is really just not good at all.
And obviously I realize that Part One was sort of supposed to be this boring mundane read because of the plot revelation in Part Two but my goodness, how was anyone supposed to really know where this book was taking them? Unless you read of course the back of the book where it is compared to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and also Fight Club. That tells you all you need to know about this book.
This book is also extremely vulgar with an F-Word on nearly every page. So, that was a bit annoying.
I am excited to see what this writer does next however because I definitely think he has potential and his influencers come from the right place.
But as for the Supermarket, I can’t say I’ll ever get my groceries from there again.
