A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza

5.0

I’m really stuck between 4 to 5 stars.
But as a piece of literature, I think it deserves 5 stars

This is a story about a Muslim Indian American family.
It’s about parents trying to raise their children to be good people the only way they know how.
It’s about children figuring out who they are to be, while trying to find their place within the family.
But even deeper, it’s about the secrets they keep, the secrets they choose to expose, and the consequences of those choices.
A Place for Us begins at the eldest daughters wedding and then, very slowly, goes back in time to give us glimpses of how they got to the point where the only son has been absent for 3 years.
This was an odd book for me because when I wasn’t reading it, I wasn’t really thinking about it. But when I picked it back up, I became so immersed in the story. I was consistently crying during Part 4. There’s some disconnect that I have with the book, that I can’t quite put my finger on..
Regardless, I am so excited to see what else SJP publishes with Hogarth. And equally excited to see what more [a: Fatima Farheen Mirza|16984671|Fatima Farheen Mirza|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1519845818p2/16984671.jpg] has to say.
