I have mixed emotions.
I liked the allusions-- Judas, Katniss. I loved the sections about the power of school librarians.
The fact that the children openly humiliated Ellie daily with nothing more than a stern warning or detention infuriated me.
Sometimes, it felt as if I were watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy where every possible crisis that could happen within a shift happened. Then again, authors are supposed to put their characters in the worst possible scenarios. Sadly, I could see this happening to Ellie daily-- constant stares, ridicule.
I worry about how students who struggle with their appearance will relate to this book. Will what happens to Ellie make them more self-conscious, or will they feel stronger because they can identify with her?
Students who like this book may like Dumplin.
