Mythology
by Edith Hamilton
challenging
dark
informative
slow-paced
This is one of those books that you buy, and then never read. I’ve fallen into a classics hole recently and I’m planning on delving into The Iliad and The Odyssey this winter and I wanted a precursor to delve into the Greek pantheon and familiarize myself with some of the characters.
This seemed like a good choice for what I was looking for, and I was right. I thought it would read like an encyclopedia, and while it does function as a reference book, it has a narrative and each story feeds into the next, and made for really enjoyable reading.
The Norse section was certainly an afterthought or Hamilton wasn’t all that interested — there are much better Norse mythology books out there. I wouldn’t really recommend this book; especially when 90% of the book is dedicated to Greek pantheon and Greek mythology.
