A real delight. As with any selection of short stories, and especially with these being of a broadly pulp variety, there are ups and downs in here.
But to me, the main draw of this series is to get a real boots-on-the-ground look at Victorian life. Doyle writes fairly offhandedly about the minutia of everyday life, and the way that that society solved problems is fascinating to me.
