The spare style of this Swedish novel in translation isn't usually my cup of tea. So I was surprised at how the tension built through the use of this Nordic Hemingwayesque style. I thought it very effective in conveying the psychological profile of the protagonist, lonely, neurotic homicide detective Wallander. He's a kind of policeman you'll never find in an American novel.
There's no mystery about who's the bad guy; we are introduced to the master criminal in the opening of the book. The question is, will Wallander figure out the puzzle in time? The tension builds slowly, to a very intense climactic chapter.
Written in 1998, the book shows its age in the dated sort of cybercrime the bad guys are trying to pull off. Still, plot and character work together to create an absorbing detective thriller.
