The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
4.0
I have never actually read the original story this novel was based on, so I really had no idea what to expect going into this story but I think that made it all the more thrilling!
TW: Murder, Blood, Gore, Body Horror, Abuse, Racism, Sexism
I really liked our main character Carlota, she started off as an innocent, accommodating, pleasant girl that always followed orders but we watched her grow and turn into a fierce woman. Despite facing hardship and coming to terms with the reality of the world she lived in, she still believed in the fairytales of books and she remained hopeful in finding her own Garden of Eden. She was true to herself, and I loved watching her progress.
This story was very slow to start, which is something I found with other Moreno-Garcia novels. Once I got about 100 pages in I found the story really captivating and I was eager to find out what happens. The stakes didn't always feel very high, as the journey was more about the characters, but I was invested in Carlota and Monty, so I wanted to know how their stories ended.
That brings me to by biggest grievance with this book, SPOILERS AHEAD.
Listen, I know that romance does not have to be included in every story I just like when it is. Seeing how much Monty cared for her, how much he loved her and not having that love reciprocated by the end is one thing but then TO SEPERATE THEM??? I was heartbroken and it honestly made me really upset at the entire book. I love a happy ending and I love LOVE.
This is still a good book don't get me wrong, but I was waiting for the whole book for her to realize her true feelings and I DIDN'T GET ANY PAYOFF. Now if this wouldn't bother you then fill your boots, you might even prefer that the two of them didn't end up together, but I didn't. I'm able to say this book was really good, that I really enjoyed it and still be upset with that ending. I wanted them together, plain and simple. I'm disappointed.
