foreversunshine13 's review for:
Across the Universe
by Beth Revis
Yeah, couldn't get past the main male character ogling the main female character's (who is a MINOR by the way) body and breasts without her consent or knowledge while she is naked, unconscious, and completely vulnerable in front of him.
And the fact that this boy is supposed to be the love interest of said girl? That left a really, really bitter taste in my mouth.
As a fellow woman, I'm shocked Beth Revis would include something like this in the book, especially when it is completely unnecessary to the plot or the story as a whole. In this day in age where we as women are finally being able to stand up against sexual harassment and assault without being shut down, this feels very much like a giant step back. We should not be including things like this in YA novels targeted to teens.
Teen boys should not think that this kind of behavior is in any way acceptable to do. Teen girls should not think that this behavior is acceptable from a potential significant other when it happens without their knowledge or consent. No, no, no!
I am so incredibly disappointed in you, Beth Revis. You have an entire generation of young teens able to access your book. Is that really what you want to teach them? What you want them to think is okay?
Do better. There is no room for crap like this.
