Being Lolita: A Memoir by Alisson Wood

challenging dark reflective medium-paced

4.0

Alisson Wood's memoir is a really wonderful read. The less I say the better, because she wrote it best. The book is a confronting read, but it is framed by Lolita which is definitely one of my favourite novels of all time. The book meditates on the ways in which authority figures in a child's life can become purposefully unreliable narrators in order to manipulate and groom them. As someone who wants to be a parent some day, I realise just how dangerous the world can be for children. So often it is the people we trust our children with the most that take advantage of and break that trust. A sad and haunting read, but one worth the emotional turmoil it places you in.
