The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
4.0

I've had this book sitting on my shelf for about 2 years now and I've heard good things but there was just something about it that made me not want to pick it up.
Now I'm moving and sorting my books and I looked at this and finally decided to just bite the bullet and read it for goodness sake.

I'm glad I did. This was lovely. It took me a little bit to get into it but soon I was invested in the characters and their lives. It was so hard to put down. I tried to sneak pages in while I was working (that didn't work out too well).

As different as Travis, Lydia, and Dill were, I related to all of them. I understood Lydia's desire to move away and create something and to finally find like-minded people. I got all mushy at Travis's personality and his attitude of not caring what other people think. He's such a fanboy, it was easy to image myself being his friend. And Dill. Dill who struggled with his faith and his family. Dill who wrote music from his heart but was hurt when his mom didn't understand him. Dill, I understood, too.

The three of them were the perfect misfits and complemented each other wonderfully. They were heartbreaking to read and I want to know more about their lives.

So don't be like me. Pick up this book and you'll fall in love with the characters, too.
