I really love Kate Leth’s work that they put out on the internet, but I didn’t know what to expect going into MALL GOTH aside from it being a kind of queer, teen coming-of-age graphic novel. And WOW was I blown away. The story Leth tells in MALL GOTH is painful, sad, aching, and also full of love, friendship, and growth; it’s a balancing act that I’m sure it was hard for them to work through and I was really impressed.
Their art style helps keep a tough story from getting too dark—their characters’ expressions are SO good—and their pacing is spot-on. I tore through this because I was totally engrossed, and while heavy it was also such a special read with a hopeful ending. If you’re queer go read this!!!!!! And if you’re not, go read it too!!!!
