A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
4.0

I'm not usually into novellas but this has been on my radar since before its publication date because a fairytale retelling? Sign me up, always!

I have to say that I expected to be on the fence about it also because contemporary characters thrown into fantasy settings aren't really my thing. I tend to cringe at the pop culture references once they are uttered in a medievalesque setting fantasy worlds usually have. Again though - the ones in 'A Spindle Splintered' were digestible. Not my favorite parts by any means but they didn't bother me the way I had anticipated (not sure if name dropping Pfizer was that great, though).
This was my first Alix E. Harrow book so writing wise I had zero concrete expectations. I really enjoyed the story as it had a bit more to offer than your classic fast paced story that just puts a spin to one you already know. The main character was likeable, her best friend absolutely amazing and the Princess funny as hell. I would say that the world building was tad confusing at times but it was nothing I couldn't get past. The royal court, the Prince and the King were absolute idiots but I get why that was done. Here the girls were shaping their own fates and I was super there for that!
