The Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman

adventurous mysterious medium-paced

This was a solid instalment of this series, and though it lead to an exciting and satisfying final show-down and conclusion, the earlier part of the book was a little repetitive, and though lots of things seemed to happen, the story itself kind of stagnated.

I felt a little on the back foot in relation to Irene’s relationships with Vale, Kai and Zayanna, which sometimes felt a little forced, especially where relationship issues were squeezed in amongst an action packed plot.

There are still lots of things to like about this series and the world, but it seems like we have got to the point where Cogman is holding things back to create tension, rather than giving more information, which has the unfortunate effect of having some of the characters’ actions seem quite stupid.

I am, nevertheless, still looking forward to reading the next in the series.
