Nice Catching You by Joshua Harwood, Ryan Taylor

2.0

DNFing around 55% in.

It's a pity, because I REALLY liked the first 25%. I found the writing easy to get drawn into, and I enjoyed the meet cute and the hotel room sharing. Unfortunely it's followed by them immediately starting to date and I just got really bored really quickly. The writing that I enjoyed at the beginning also soon became a "and then and then and then" writing style, with a LOT of unnecessary detail in what food they were ordering at restaurants or making at home.

The main conflict of the story after they start dating becomes Nick, the hockey player, wanting to come out, and Jacob, the law student, telling Nick he definitely should not come out, and then we have every kind of cliché with coming out imaginable, including the "you can tell me about your secret I promise I won't tell anyone! And then immediately tells everyone" friend, and the "I'm going to get irrationally angry at you because you didn't tell me you're gay and obviously you coming out is ALL ABOUT ME" friend, which all felt VERY high school.

I decided to DNF once we got into the sex scene and, what started as a boys-will-be-boys joke about the names of their dicks becomes a very cringey sex scene in which Nick's dick is constantly being referred to as The Excalibur throughout the entire scene, and I just could not keep going.

(Also there's a formatting issue that really bothered me - chapter 1 starts by saying the date, 4 December, under the chapter, and then chapter 10 starts with 6 December (completely skipping 5 December, even though chapter 9 took place during 5 December). I kept reading until chapter 25 and not once did they ever mention the date again. Also the chapter illustration is of an eagle holding hockey sticks but the team Nick plays for are the Bulldogs?)
