Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian - My Story of Rescue, Hope, and Triumph by Yusra Mardini

3.5

7/10 stars. Yursa Mardini didn't asked to be a refugee. She didn't ask for the war that tore her country apart and forced her family's continued relocation until they finally made the choice to flee. Nor did she seek to become an international spokesperson for refugees. But that is exactly what she became. First her story was captured by several journalists during her trip from Syria to Germany, and then she was catapulted to international fame after she became part of the first Olympic Refugee Team.

I appreciate Yursa telling her story, and I hope the world continues to be willing to consider these challenging issues of homeland, belonging, open borders, welcome, and freedom.
