I'm a huge Karin Slaughter fan and this was another fast-paced, twisty, and complex thriller that kept me guessing until the end.
When a young girl is brought into the ER after being violently attacked, Sara does everything she can to save the girl; including hearing her confess what really happened. While her detective partner investigates, some similarities come to the surface that take Sara back to an assault she'd rather forget, 15 years ago. Could the two be connected?
One reason KS is my favourite crime author is because of how much effort she puts into her books. Each novel is well-researched and tightly plotted with great character development, and After That Night was no exception. It had the perfect pace that made it hard to stop listening, especially when I finally started making the connections. I loved how things were explored from different angles, giving multiple perspectives and dropping clues along the way. I get lost in Slaughter's writing more than any other author - she makes even the smallest mundanities interesting and pays such close attention to detail. That said, it did get a little too detailed at times, but that's to be expected when your two main characters are experts in their respective fields.
Despite having not read every book in the Will Trent series, I soon picked up on the characters and their connections. While I'm sure the previous novels would provide more context and familiarity, I found this one fine to read as a standalone. There are quite a lot of characters to keep track of but each has a role to play and isn't just in there as a filler red herring.
I reserved the next book in the series as soon as I finished, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next (and also going back to read all the other Will Trent books I've accidentally skipped).
