Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

I liked it but I wasn't blown away. The Mercy Thompson series was highly recommended to me by so many that maybe my expectations were too high.

In Moon Called, like in the Alpha& Omega series, it is obvious from page one that Briggs took the time to develop rich characters, giving each a unique background and story. There is nothing simple about her world-building and I love it.

Still, Moon Called sometimes feels a bit like the deep breath before the story really kicks off. There are a lot of descriptive passages and not enough personal interactions and dialogues between the characters. This provides the reader a good view into the MT-Universe but at the same time makes it harder to connect with the characters and get a feel for their relationship towards one another.
SpoilerFor example, Mercy explains her difficult past with Samuel and yet, by the end of the book I still don't know how she actually feels about him. Likewise, there are hints towards a romantic connection to Adam, but again I don't know anything about what their relationship is like when she isn't saving his butt from rouge werewolves and the like.

At the same time I have to admit that I'm glad that the romance was allowed to take a back-seat in the grand scheme of things and that Mercy doesn't spend half the book mooning over the male protagonists instead of focusing on the problems at hand. (Which makes the could-be-there love-triangle very bearable for someone who can't stand them). Mercy is strong and brave, loyal, smart and just a genuinely good person and enjoyable main character. Maybe a bit lacking in the humour department, but hey, not everyone can be a smart-mouthed sarcastic asskicker like Kate Daniels. It probably wouldn't work with all the dominant werewolves around and so she does things more subtly like parking her rusting shell of a car right outside her slightly OCD Neighbours' aka Adam's bedroom window. Classic. I love it!

So basically, Moon Called, while maybe not perfect, is a promising series kick-off and I'm very much looking forward to reading the sequels.
