Circe by Madeline Miller
4.0

Madeline Miller's novel Circe is a captivating retelling of the story of the infamous witch from Greek mythology. The novel follows Circe as she navigates the dangerous world of the gods and mortals, struggling to find her place in a society that often dismisses her because of her powers.

The novel explores the nature of power and the consequences of using one's abilities in a number of ways. Through the character of Circe, we see how power can be both a blessing and a curse, and how those who possess it must be careful not to abuse it.

For example, we see how Circe's powers allow her to transform those around her, both for good and for ill. She uses her abilities to help some of the mortals and gods she encounters, but she also uses them to punish those who have wronged her. This leads to a number of moral dilemmas for Circe, as she must decide when and how to use her powers, and how to balance the desire to help others with the need to protect herself.

In the novel, Circe's powers are referred to as farmaka, which closely resembles the ancient tradition of alchemy. In alchemy, practitioners sought to transform base metals into gold. Similarly, Circe's farmaka allows her to transform the world around her, both through her ability to create potions and through her power to change the shape and form of living beings. Similarly, the tradition of alchemy was also seen as a means of psychological and spiritual transformation. The goal of alchemy was not only to transmute base metals into gold, but also to transmute the base metal of the soul into gold.

This idea of spiritual transformation is seen in Circe, who undergoes a profound transformation on both a physical and psychological level. She learns to control her powers and use them wisely, and she also learns to accept and embrace her abilities, rather than seeing them as a curse. As a result, she becomes more confident and self-assured. She learns to stand up for herself and defend her own interests, and she becomes more at peace with who she is and her place in the world.

I read this book when I was deep into researching about alchemy, so it was such a joy to be able to witness the transformation it beholds in the form of a story.
