The Law of Moses
by Amy Harmon
I did not enjoy the first half of this book. I thought Moses was a dick and Georgia a doormat. It's odd though, because I saw Ms. Harmon trying to convince me that Moses was really just a very troubled boy and Georgia was a strong girl who saw something in Moses when no one else did. I got all that. I really did, but I didn't feel it. This was disappointing, because I really connected with the first Amy Harmon book I read, Making Faces .
Ms. Harmon seems to enjoy writing wounded characters and likes a good tragedy. I like both of those things in my books too, especially when paired with good writing and a decent plot. Amy Harmon nails the writing and the execution, I just didn't love it and so I wasn't moved by the tragedy that these two characters have to endure in the second half of the book.
I will say that the latter half of the book saved this book from being a DNF because Moses grows up and he makes a friend. His friend, Tag, was a seriously great addition, because it allowed Moses to have someone looking over his shoulder, someone who would stop him and ask him what the hell he was doing when he started messing things up *again* with Georgia.
I saw Tag now has his own book, I think I'll be picking that one up in the next few weeks. Overall, I really like Harmon's books, but this one just didn't connect with me.
