Delusion in Death
by J.D. Robb
This series is a guilty pleasure, but I didn't really love the latest. The premise was good, with someone unleashing a toxin in crowded places that makes everyone exposed homicidal. But the characterization seemed flat and phoned in, even of beloved characters like Eve and Roarke. For one thing, when did Eve suddenly become unable to understand idiomatic expressions? While in the past it was always funny when literal-minded Eve grumbled about how some expression didn't make sense, the author seems to have thrown in so many of these that it makes her seem like an idiot. Who never heard of the expression "dog eat dog world" ?? I'm sure I'll keep reading, but after the great growth of Eve in New York to Dallas, these characters seem like they are back to spinning their wheels. They do reference the trauma of that volume, but the therapeutic fix (picture Mira and your nightmare will go away!) is silly and disappointing.
