As Good As Dead
by Holly Jackson
I'm going to give it a 3 because, like the other two, once this book picked up, it was physically impossible to put it down. That being said, however, the pacing of this one was very strange. The mystery is solved within the first 200 pages—which would have been fine if this book wasn't nearly 500 pages long. The actual murder part and the subsequent covering it up was deeply interesting, but also long (not that that's actually a problem. My forensics knowledge was validated during this, and it was satisfying to read everything click into place).
My real issue was with what comes after the murder/cover up. Why was Pip constantly swinging between "Oh I'm totally in the clear, Max is cooked" to "Oh my God I have to turn myself in/run away and go no contact with everybody". It felt very abrupt. And I don't even have to say anything about the last 20 or so pages....Ravi's sobbing in the woods broke my heart. Also, we got ONE chapter of the 694 days???? And no epilogue???? Just a single text message???? Don't piss me off. I'm so glad they reconnected though. And you know I'm always happy to see a rapist get what they deserve!
My favorite part was probably when DT kidnaps her and she breaks the fuck out and murders him. The imagery of Pip wrapped in duct tape is haunting tho, jfc.
Overall, while this was a thrilling and captivating read, it doesn't measure up to the 1st book in my humble opinion. It was definitely more intriguing than the 2nd book though, upon reflection. I can't wait to see the rest of the trilogy adapted!! GG
