Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

5.0

A perfect peek into Maverick's life as a teen. Angie Thomas struck gold again in a young person's narrative. How it feels to be in love, how it feels to own up to big mistakes, to make tough choices and figure out what manhood is to you.

My only teeny middling complaint is that we don't get to watch Mav actually get out of the King Lords. It feels like there was a lot of build up, and we know in The Hate U Give that it was a major moment and decision in his life. I can imagine it- Angie built Mav into such a full, true character, but I wanted to hear him say how he did it, how he felt, make those promises.
