This was my first foray into Faulkner's work. I'll want a good recommendation before going back, lol.
I mean, this was definitely a slice of time-and-place in a bottle. The evocation of daily life in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee in a certain time frame all struck true.
I lost track of the plot between when Christmas was in jail and when his break was initially mentioned - and I don't feel like I missed anything, in part because the moment was recounted from another angle. I probably missed what his grandmother told him... And that's vaguely interesting, but also I didn't care enough to pause, rewind, relisten.
Faulkner's quote about reading everything and so learn what is good writing - I do appreciate that perspective. And I see how that applies here. And now I have a sense of his work for the next time I hear it referenced. That's a win enough for me.
