“Whatever comes in the days ahead, I am with you,” he said. “If you want to go to the mainland, I will take you there. If you want to remain in the east, so will I. And if you want to venture into the west, let me be at your side.”

Magic and spirits, and a quest to find missing girls sounded like a promising story to me. Jack, one of the main characters, is a bard who has lived on the mainland for a long time before he gets called back to the Isle of Cadence to aid in finding the little girls of the East who suddenly disappear with little to no trace.

I love the magic system and how the spirits play a huge part in the daily life of the people. The story revolves around the people of the East because that’s where the main characters are. There are people whose craft allows them to use magic but that comes with a cost.

A lot of parts feel slow to me, there is little action and when there is, it doesn’t really have that oomph. Adaira and Jack, to me, are kind of bland in the beginning. I guess I was expecting more from their talk with the spirits. Torin and Sidra carry most of the story because of how complex their relationship is, and the angst they bring??? I nearly wept.
