svmitche 's review for:
California Gold
by John Jakes
Really great historical detail, but the plot is just too melodramatic for me! I really loved John Jakes’ North and South back in the day, but wonder if it was down to seeing the TV series made from it and so being much more willing to ignore its flaws?
As I said, you can clearly see the time and historical research that has gone into this book and the events taking place around the characters are interesting to read about. Another reviewer said it felt a bit like Forrest Gump - a whistle stop tour of Californian history with these characters just plopped on top.
I had two more of his books at home, but will probably not read them after all…
