Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
3.0

I think I played myself by choosing to read Brideshead Revisited, and on pride month of all months!! I'm a bit conflicted about this novel - on one hand it feels like a classically British Merchant-Ivory hoity-toity Oxford University comedy-of-manners (which I don't love). Then on the other hand, it's a very melancholy reflection on memory, faith, and lost youth (which I love). AND on top of all that, it has the cult status of being an early gay novel. Little did I know, it is a very understated portrayal of The Gays - think more 'Gosford Park' than 'Maurice'.

So I didn't love Brideshead Revisited, but that might be more on my dashed expectations than a reflection on the book itself. I'm happy to have made a dent in my 'classics-you-should-have-read-by-now' shelf.
