The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5.0

I never go for these types of books, and most of my friends loved The Hunger Games, AND I had a copy of the book lying around, so I tried it out and loved it!

Because this is a genre I don’t go for, I would not consider this my favourite book, but it still deserves 5 stars. I saw no major flaws in this book. The only small flaw though were not being engaging at times. That’s basically it though!

This book is very plot heavy, like Harry Potter. That being said though, I do like plot heavy books so I didn’t get bothered by this. If you don’t like plot heavy books, this might not be the book for you. The story is about the main character, Katniss, who lives in Panem; a country with 12 districts and the capital city, Capitol. Katniss lives in district 12, and when 1 boy and 1 girl are getting chosen from each district to participate in The Hunger Games, Katniss steps forward to take her sister’s place in the games. It’s obvious by the title of the book that this story has violence in it, and a lot of killing and blood is involved, but it’s not as bad as some may think. Not every chapter is filled with gory which I was surprised by and enjoyed as I didn’t want to read a book where every single page is filled with killing and blood. The writing style is nice, it’s not cringy, and it never got confusing which also surprised me as I’m the sort of person to get confused quite often in books, especially plot heavy stories.

I like the characters. Although they were a bit bland, who can blame them? They live in a horrible society, of course they’re not going to have eccentric personalities. Katniss is a very independent, intelligent, and somewhat nice character. Peeta is nice and caring, but also flirty. My favourite character would have to be Rue. She reminds me of myself. I was sad how she ended up though at the end of the book (not spoiling).

This is an amazing book, one that I would’ve read so much earlier on if I knew it was this good. I’ll be sure to get the next book which has equal amount of praise that this book has. If you don’t enjoy reading, and want to start getting into reading or back into reading, this would be a great choice, as it’s a trilogy and has more depth in the story than a standalone book would have. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!
