Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen
by Jose Antonio Vargas
1) This is one person's story. No single story can be representative of an entire population. But it's a very powerful story.
2) Even though this book was only published two years ago, I wish I could have read it decades ago.
3) We need to be gentle. There is a time and place for force. We need to be forceful in seeking truth, in standing for people, and against inequitable systems & ideologies. But we need to be gentle with each other and ourselves. With all the humans we come across. Because we have no idea.
4) Everyone should read this book. Not as an anthem of immigrant experience. But to confront one man's experience being nationless. Stories have power and allow us to engage with issues from a humanizing position that can break the chains of "othering" and objectification.
5) We should just stop being ignorant dicks (I'm still working on #3).
