Seventh Scroll by Wilbur Smith
4.0

This isn’t what I expected as a second book in the Ancient Egypt series but I enjoyed it nonetheless! Instead of following Taita, the main character from the first book, we’re picking up thousands of years later with Royan and Nicholas as they try to find the tomb of an ancient Pharaoh using cryptic clues from Taita’s writings.

I found it to be a very interesting and suspenseful read as they slowly solve the unbelievable puzzle Taita has laid out while trying to evade the evils that seek to discover the tomb first. I loved seeing Taita’s work in action again, as he was of course our main character in the first book and the key to this series. The characters in this story were definitely interesting, though there’s no one quite like Taita. Royan and Nicholas were our main characters here, and though I liked them separately, I was a little disappointed in feeling that Royan got a bit overshadowed by Nicholas. The beginning of the book sets her up to be very intelligent and resourceful, and I found that Nicholas’s own set of skills and smarts were featured much more. There were also many other characters we got to know pretty well throughout this story that really had you invested in their individual stories (whether you were rooting for their success or demise). The author really seemed to also be rooting for the demise of some of the characters, giving us some very graphic detail which I at times found unnecessary to the main story.

I think it was a very creative follow-up to the first book, and enjoyed the story and the twists and turns throughout. Would give it a 3.5, rounded up to 4 for this app.
