IT'S ABOUT VAMPIRES. Just FYI, the back of the book COMPLETELY AND DELIBERATELY misleads you, you find out within a dozen pages it's all about vampires in the most standard vampiric way.
So, if you're like me, and dislike vampires because they're boring, perfect creatures that don't lend themselves well to being romantic villains, don't read this book.
I was so angry that this book deliberately masked the fact that it was a vampire novel probably for marketing reasons, but it was just so frustrating as a user. So already I was irritated within the first few pages. But on top of that the novel was poorly constructed and riddled with plot holes. The transformation process was poorly explained and contradictory at times. The villain was sloppily crafted and unbelievable. At no point did I root for the heroine because all she did was wander without point or purpose continually getting herself into convenient-to-the-plot issues. Halfway through the novel, flashbacks started getting thrown in like a word count was trying to be met and not adding much to the story itself.
The only reason the novel doesn't get one star is because the setting/world-building was unique and the heroine wasn't "clumsy and unaware of her own beauty".
