Dragons of Winter Night
by Margaret Weis
For some reason this novel started out slow for me. The pace picked up quickly though, and being introduced to more new characters was nice. Though where this book really got me was the amount of conflict it lead into.
The heroes were in jeopardy. And without spoiling it for others, it was the first book I had read where things happened that I didn't really expect. I remember as I read, about half way through it, having to stop.
I was sad. What I considered unthinkable happened. I had to grieve, and then just as I recovered and continued reading, again with something grief worthy! It very much had that Empire Strikes Back feel, where it seemed like the heroes were losing in a war against the forces of evil. It's that kind of classic adversity which makes for good dramatic story arcs in the first place, and it didn't seem like a tired mechanism here.
Of all the heroes of the Chronicles, I think this novel really highlighted Laurana as a warrior princess. I loved the original cover art by Larry Elmore. As a matter of fact, his art work had a lot to do with capturing my interest in the novels from the basis of seeing it on a shelf in the school library to wanting to even begin delving into it.
This was a great middle to the epic that is the Dragonlance Chronicles. I had read it over the course of Christmas vacation, and didn't put it down the whole time. Reading near-constantly. Thinking more about this story, than what presents awaited under the tree.
