I think the second book is going to determine whether this makes it to my favorites shelf or not.
The whole volts as a currency thing seems bizarre to me, and there's no real explanation of why they chose to make that the currency instead of, yknow, paper money. Especially since the concept of orbs is apparently relatively new, and before their invention people would have to carry an electric charge in their body in order to buy a hot dog from the food cart? It just seems like a super bizarre and inconvenient system.
Overall, I would have liked a bit more worldbuilding, as things like this are sort of just glazed over, but I enjoyed the plot and the romance. While it's not anything particularly unique, it's got mystery, magic, crime gangs and card games of death. So it's hit a lot of my sweet spots.
