Babel by R.F. Kuang

Did not finish book. Stopped at 55%.
After a month on pause I decided to continue this book and after one more chapter I realized that I just don't care any more. I am a bit disappointed, especially in the character work. I loved Rin and Kitay in the Poppy War and even though I had my complains about the later books in that trilogy, I was still engaged. I can't say the same about this one.

Babel starts really well, but then I got hit with an hard magic system and very straightforward morals with no subtlety. To be honest, this type of book is just not my cup of tea and that doesn't mean it's bad. I think that if I finished it it would be 3 stars, but I have a big list of books to read and I don't want to waste time on a book that would be average to me in the end. I know this because I am a very character focused reader and if the characters didn't work for me up to this point they will not work in the other half of the book. I am upset because I thought there was a lot of potential at first, but everything started to fell flat, unfortunately.

I liked the linguistics part of this book though.
