Date with Malice by Julia Chapman
3.0

I found Date with Death, the first instalment in The Dales Detective series, entertaining enough but the language a little clunky. In Date with Malice, the second instalment in the series, Chapman's seemed to have reined in the overly flowery descriptions to focus on plot and the book reads better for it. Chapman still likes to switch narrators several times within a single chapter - a conceit I (still) find disconcerting and a little annoying. Still, if you like Agatha Christie, James Herriot, Robert Galbraith's (aka JK Rowling) Cormoran Strike series and Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club, you might enjoy The Dales Detective series; it's got a blend of elements from all these series - British mystery novel, set in Yorkshire with a quirky cast of villagers and their love for strong tea, tough as nails detective character with some Past, a bunch of murders in a retirement home.
