Books of Blood: Volumes 1-3 by Clive Barker

5.0

My first experience reading any Clive Barker and I loved it - so imaginatively horrible! There's a real curiosity and inventiveness about these stories, a pulsating sexuality and gore which makes them stand out. Some of the best had these completely unbelievable premises that Barker just followed through on to the most extreme conclusion, and I really enjoyed that genuine commitment to the craft. So many of them were about the attractions of madness as the characters went all the way through it and out the other side, and what might be enjoyable about that loss of self/sanity - Barker is so focused on this openness, the sexuality of horror, the enjoyment of perversion even as it deconstructs you. It was fascinating! Big rec, although of course these will not be for everyone.
