The Heart of a Cowboy by Jody Hedlund

5.0

Well shucks! Is this one of the sweetest and swooniest dang books I ever read? Yep! Did I want it to end? Nope! These McQuaid brothers are really setting my heart a racin’ like a stampede of wild stallions. And their strong willed, determined, and resilient womenfolk are most inspiring and perfect matches for these rugged cowboys.

Flynn McQuaid is a man burdened down. He has lost his mother, his family farm, and he couldn’t keep his brother from sneaking off to join the war efforts. He is angry and hurt and filled with guilt. As guardian to his remaining younger two siblings, he sets off to join Wyatt at his ranch across the country.

Linnea Newberry is a singular woman, highly educated, extremely intelligent, quite bold and forward and somewhat progressive thinking. Nothing like Flynn has ever encountered before. But she is also prone to mishaps and wanderings, why, her nickname should be Calamity Jane. Trouble always seems to find her. When she takes a tumble into the river, Flynn immediately comes to her rescue. And that won’t be the last time he has to rescue her either. She continually finds herself in his debt and in his arms. But romance is the furthest thing from both of their minds. She has her career aspirations and he has sworn off ever loving and marrying.

This story was soooo good! I loved Flynn and Linnea together. Two exceptional characters with so much depth and a romance that sizzles like bacon in a hot cast iron skillet. And Ivy! She is a handful and she takes the saying “from the mouth babes” to a whole new level. I can’t wait to read about her story and the cowboy brave enough to tame her!

I can already tell the next book is going to be another favorite. I love stories involving veterans, and Brody is a broken man who has experienced the horrors of the war, and has no hope and no will to go on.
