This is spec fic framed as a memoir, which is complex and layered and a very interesting framing. The second-civil-war USA is an interesting thought experiment clearly grounded in real life politics, but it is disjointed with the continued references to contemporary artists and celebrities. If you can suspend your disbelief though, the core story of the relationship is fascinating and sad in a captivating way. X is almost a charivature, which increasingly becomes the point, and the flaws in the narrator’s perspective are intriguing. The detail the author put in to the structure with evidence, exhibits, and footnotes is creative and interesting and a fun play with form. All in all, a worthwhile read.
