Clockwork Princess
by Cassandra Clare
Yes, despite it being a mismash of issues, I am giving this book a 3 star rating. I like the characters and the storyline. I just wish Clare would give up on the "love scene/romance scene" writing because when she writes these scenes it is all hack drivel. They read like a teenager who never had a boyfriend wrote them as fanfic.
I enjoyed the story when it was progressing the plot. Clare does very well in that sort of writing despite the annoying "words" she uses in her universe that she has made up. I can do without hearing the word "ichor" ever again since it was badly overused in the first chapter or two. I loved the supporting characters in the book...finding out what happened with their plots and I liked how since they were not the focus on the story, their relationships were not so melodramatic as the Jem/Will/Tessa relationship with was at eye-rolling levels of stupid. Really??? Jem didn't have a clue Will loved Tessa but EVERYONE else around him did? Wow, he must be dumb as a board to miss the clues!
The love triangle...it was at annoying levels of melodrama. The way it was wrapped up was too neat at the end because Tessa just loves two people at once. What a fickle girl! I find it telling I had to look up Tessa's name again, even after reading the two other books, because her name escaped me.I suppose "Mary Sue" would have been too obvious a choice since that is what her character is in personality.
These books had possibility, they had great sections of writing that engaged me, and they had sections that were pure fanfic "written by a 14 year old who has never been kissed". If the focus had not been on the limping, lame, Jem/Will/Tessa love triangle the books would have been so much better. I also wish the shifts of story/character prospective where separated better because it is a bit jarring and confusing to have it happen after only a double page break.
I am glad I followed the series to the end, I shed a tear here and there while reading (Yes, I admit it!), but this series could have been so much better than it was. I will not be reading Clare's other series anytime soon because her writing does not appeal to me. I have never been a fan of fanfic style writing. So, this series will probably end my reading of her work.
