I typically steer away from psychology and self help type of books because they usually do not resonate with me and often can make me feel worse. I believe if it wasn’t a friends recommendation I would have never picked this up. However, I believe it was the fictitious nature of this Socratic conversation that made me understand this book and resonate it more.

Now, I will say that this can be a bit of a controversial read as the older philosopher, who is giving advice to the younger man, follows the Adlerian psychology which insists that trauma does not exist. There is a big focal point on choices that we feel have come from our upbringing is a choice. As well as our emotions such as anger and despair. A big portion of this as that courage is important, that people lack the courage to exude happiness and to allow ourselves to stop comparing ourselves to others and to leave the victimizing of ourselves behind.

I do not completely agree with this theory however for my personal life I have a tendency to say well those are the straws I’ve been given and while certain things can be out of my control, not everything is and I need to remind myself of that. My thinking is strictly that I fight for everything and for everyone so why not for myself.
